NJV has been granted a Special Prospecting Licence (SPL) 1420 has been renewed for the period April 1, 2015 until March 31, 2020 by the Government.

Majority of Namosi landowners support the licence for exploratory drilling by the Namosi Joint Venture (NJV), says Daniele Vakatawabai, the head of the mataqali (clan) Nabukebuke at Namosi Village.

He made the statement following reports of a group of people going around the province telling people that they were not happy with the extension of the licence.

“They are just representing themselves and the consent they were showing does not truly represent the consent given to the Government,” Mr Vakatawabai said.

NJV has been granted a Special Prospecting Licence (SPL 1420) by Government to explore for minerals in the Namosi region, approximately 30 kilometres west of Suva. The licence area is primarily in Namosi and Naitasiri provinces.

This licence, Mr Vakatawabai said, was extended after consultations made by a Government team and landowners.

The claim that majority did not give their consent, he said, was baseless.

The Permanent Secretary for Lands, Tevita Boseiwaqa said a Government team met with the landowners who had given their consent for the renewal of the licence.

He said all procedures were followed before the licence was renewed.
