More and more Fijians are buying environmentally-friendly vehicles like the Toyota Prius Hybrid Cars.

This was revealed by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in its effort to help Government reduce climate change effects in the country.

LTA chief executive officer Naisa Tuinaceva said they had been encouraging Fijians to invest in environmentally-friendly vehicles.

“We have been encouraging people to buy vehicles that have very little or no carbon emission at all. The Hybrid Prius is an example,” Mr Tuinaceva said.

Since 2013, the LTA has registered more than 2000 Toyota Prius Hybrid Cars.

Mr Tuinaceva said the facilitation of quicker and proper documentation for people wishing to buy Toyota Prius Hybrid was a way they could assist in reducing carbon emission on our roads.

Toyota Prius is a low carbon emitting vehicle which has very low fuel efficiency and has a dual powering system, either by battery or fuel.

This move by LTA coincides with Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama’s call during the opening of the National Climate Change Summit in Levuka on Tuesday for Fijians to reduce our carbon gas emission by 90 per cent.

“We have observed that many PSV drivers who used to own old taxis are switching to Prius Hybrid because of its low fuel usage. We even discover large amount of private buyers buying the Prius. As the land transport regulator, we are aligning ourselves to the overall Government and global climate change mitigating policies designed to address climate change,” he said.

“It is important for LTA to continue to play a proactive approach that will contribute by reducing the use of fossil fuel in the transportation and energy sector of the economy and saving the environment which in return provide for a more productive, sustainable and independent self-reliance economy.”

He said this was a collective effort LTA to promote green growth in the country.
