Seven Years For Rape Of Boy

An eighteen-year-old university student has been sentenced to seven years in jail for raping a nine-year-old boy.

The High Court in Lautoka sentenced Ulaiasi Matagasau Tokatokavanua for raping the boy on four different occasions on October and November 2014 and April 2015.

The court was told that the victim’s parents had heard rumors that their son was being sexually assaulted.

Upon enquiry with their son, the rumours were confirmed to be true by him. A medical examination also revealed signs of physical trauma on the victim.

The accused was arrested and admitted the offence while being interviewed by Police.

He also pleaded guilty to the crime in court.

In mitigation, the court heard that the accused was 18 years old and a first offender. He was studying office administration at university and had fully co-operated with police. He was also remorseful for his behaviour and sought forgiveness from the victim’s family in a traditional manner.

The accused is sentenced to seven years imprisonment with a minimum of three years before he is eligible for parole.
