Three Students Remembered Today

The recent deaths of three young people in Suva, casts a dark shadow today over World Suicide Prevention Day.

Today, stakeholders will get together to reiterate that suicide is preventable with a little help from friends and specialists. The theme is, ‘Reaching Out and Saving Lives,’ and Minister for Health Jone Usamate wants to ensure that this isn’t just rhetoric.

“Suicide is having a major impact on the lives of Fijians so such taboos must be eliminated and the matter must be addressed transparently and without any stigma attached.”

A march will begin this morning from Suva Flea Market and down to Ratu Sukuna Park.

The official programme for WSPD at the Park will include the commemoration of those who have lost their lives to suicide.

Those expected to be commemorated are the three students from a close-knit community in Suva, who allegedly drank paraquat two weeks ago. One died a day later caused by internal injuries and his friends died a few days later, a few hours apart.

The Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Policy in Fiji will be launched next month during the World Mental Health Day.
