The people of the Yasawa Group have a food bank that prepare, educate and supplies them with basic needs against natural disasters.

The initiative was formed by the Vinaka Fiji Yasawa Trust Fund Foundation and tourist operators to the group.

Foundation manager Elenoa Nimacere said their organisation was formed to assist islanders prepare for natural disasters, especially cyclones and hurricanes.

“The foundation was formed by Awesome Adventures Fiji, which is a subsidiary of South Sea Cruises and sister company to Blue Lagoon Cruises. They travel the Yasawas 365 days,” Ms Nimacere said.

Ms Nimacere said the Commissioner Western’s Office assisted in their programme.

“From there we work out and see that the village plans put in place are good for Yasawa.

“One of them is education, not only one on one, but teaching children who cannot afford to come to mainland Viti Levu to learn agriculture and marine environment studies.

“The food bank is to prepare them for disasters and we empower them to provide for themselves before help arrives from other places during disasters.

“We plant resilient crops like kumala, cassava, yams and banana to help us during disasters,” she said.
