District chiefs in Kadavu are taking conservation to another level. They have joined the Kadavu Yaubula Management Support Team (KMYST).  The KMYST is co-ordinated by the iTaukei Affairs Board (TAB).

This was confirmed by the Board’s media liaison officer, Alipate Natoba from Vunisea, Kadavu, yesterday.

Mr Natoba said the goal of the project was to assist the restoration of diversity and maintain a high abundance of natural resources in Kadavu.

He said in 2013, after a report tabled by KYMST on the huge decline in beche-de-mer in fishing grounds and reefs surrounding Kadavu, they had chiefs agreed to ban the use of gas tanks to dive for beche-de-mer or sea cucumber.

The Deputy Permanent Secretary TAB, Apakuki Kurusiga, said TAB had appointed 14 conservation officers to serve all the provinces in Fiji.
