SODELPA President, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu stood his ground yesterday.

This followed several attempts by principal administrative officer, Mick Beddoes and his assistant Adi Laufitu Malani to delay the passing of the SODELPA’s amended constitution and the appointment of the three new vice-presidents of the management board.

Ratu Naiqama said that it was imperative that the elections took place.

“We need to work with time, we only have one year left for us to work and if we delay this then we will not have enough time to groom ourselves before the next elections.

“I would like to apologise to Mr Beddoes regarding the way I spoke but I think this is important, we do not have much time to prepare.”

After Ratu Naiqama spoke, the SODELPA delegates nominated parliamentarian Ratu Kiniviliame Kiliraki and former permanent secretary Anare Jale as vice-president.

This was done despite the party constitution requiring three vice-presidents.

Opposition Leader,Ro Teimumu Kepa asked for an adjournment to discuss with Ratu Sela Nanovo and former Roko Tui Rewa,Savenaca Kamikamica.

The three took five minutes to discuss before proposing Mr Kamikamica as the third vice-president.

This was agreed to unanimously.

Under the amended constitution, the management board includes 40 members, 1 president and three vice-president.

The board will have their first meeting on October 15.
