Lakhan Tells Youth To Remember Roots

Farming for more than 50 years is all 84 year old Ram Lakhan has known his whole life.
He started his farming journey through sugarcane at the age of 13 and since then, has made farming his life.
Mr Lakhan has settled his farm in the village of Muaniweni where he farms both livestock and crops.
While touring the 2015 Central Division Agricultural show at Syria, Nausori he said: “I love farming. When I was little, my father taught me how to farm and I had so much interest.
“This was all I wanted to do, so I kept to it and started my farming when I was old enough.”
Mr Lakhan’s passion went over to his children.
He said: “My children like farming and just like I was taught – I taught them as well. Now they have their own farms and will teach their children.
“When our forefathers came to Fiji, farming was all we did and it was passed on to generations.
“It is good to see our young children going to offices and working but they must never forget where they started.
“Everyone moves away from farming because of money, but here is where the money is. If people want to work hard they will reap the rewards.”
Mr Lakhan used to operate a commercial farm where he would sell his crop and livestock in Suva and Nausori but with the catching of age, he has moved into residential farming.
Currently, Mr Lakhan has one employee who helps out at the farm and he sells some of his crops to neighbours.
Agriculture Show
Mr Lakhan was pleased to see some many students at the 2015 Central Division Agricultural show taking interest in the field.
He said: “I am glad there is a show as such which allows young children to see the benefits of farming.”
Personally, he said he enjoyed the show and hopes the Government continues shows like this to help the younger ones understand the business of agriculture.
