The Fiji Women’s 7s team defeated Cook Islands to win bronze at the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games in Apia, Samoa yesterday.

Fiji Rugby Union Women’s development officer Paulini Tamatasasa said they were proud of the girls’ achievements.

“This is just a development team. It took them two weeks to work together and get to know each other and we are really proud of them,” Tamatasasa said.

The Fijian Boys’ 7s team edged Namibia 26-19 to finish in fifth place.  South Africa won gold, Australia won silver and hosts Samoa won bronze.

Meanwhile another highlight yesterday was the team surprising Vodafone Fijian 7s coach Ben Ryan’s with a birthday cake to celebrate his 44th birthday.

Fiji finished in 13th place out of 64 countries which participated at this year’s Commonwealth Youth Games. Team Fiji returns home today with two gold, two silver and two bronze medals.
