Vodafone Flying Fijians oldest player, Sunia Koto, gave his verdict about the teams chances at the Rugby World Cup come September 18.

He has firm belief that the Vodafone Flying Fijians will cause the first upset at the tournament when they take on England at Twickenham this Saturday.

The experience Fijian hooker praises the wealth of talent in the Fijian team  that will burst into action against England in the tournament’s opening game.

“Sometimes, I’m honestly in awe at the amount of talent we now have in the Fiji team,” says the 35-year-old vice-captain, who has been on the international scene for a decade but has never seen a Fijian team with more gifts and potential.

“Even if I’m the oldest in the team, I quietly admire them for what they can do and what they are doing for their respective clubs. For me, I feel it’s a great honour to play with them,” Koto told World Rugby.

“We’ve been working hard for the last few months to get all these remarkable individual talents working together and we’re excited as a team.”

Koto, 35, a star of Fiji’s romantic charge to the quarterfinals in 2007, obliged by giving his considered verdict on the ‘Flyers’ who he hopes can light up the tournament.

Vereniki Goneva (Leicester, centre, age 31)

“The only exciting part of him is when we give him the ball and he does that very deceptive step of his. Beautiful! He’s a good friend of mine; very humble off the field but on it a really good leader.

“He has good communication skills, is good in defence but his attacking skills are the most amazing. He has this great ability to break tackles. I don’t know how he does that. I ask him his secret but he doesn’t want to share it,” Koto said.

Nemani Nadolo (Crusaders, wing, age 27)

“He’s a big boy, a massive boy but along the way, seeing him grows from that raw talent and adding a lot of skills for a big man to his game have been just amazing.

“It is not just power, he is skilful and has been a sensation in Super Rugby. It’s good to see him growing in the Fiji jersey,” Koto added.

Nikola Matawalu (Bath, scrum-half, age 26)

“Rugby aside, first of all, he’s just a funny bloke, the joker in the team. But on the field, he makes the difference.

“We joke around as a pack that we have to be super-fit forwards because he loves to run us all over the place.

“He brings a different kind of flavor to our game and with his exceptional skills, the coaches are working really hard with him.”

Metuisela Talebula (Bordeaux, wing, age 24)

“He came over from Fiji as a sevens phenomenon then stayed with Bordeaux and since then he’s just been growing, growing, growing and has been sensational in France.

“The amazing thing is that he’s actually only had a limited time as a professional but you see him in games and you think he’s been playing there for ages,” Koto said.

Vodafone Flying Fijians side worked specific on their game plans on Friday.

“It was a good day for us on Friday where we worked specific on our game plan and we worked a lot more detail on some areas.

“We lifted our intensity and I was impressed with the player’s performance,” head coach John McKee said.

McKee believes the media coverage will boost the player’s preparation.

“Media interest around the place, the team’s getting good coverage over here and it will boost their preparation,” he added.

The Vodafone Flying Fijians take on England this Saturday at Twickenham at 7am (Fijian time).
