A road accident on Friday night cost the life of a 50-year-old woman.

Salanieta Sawakasa was hit by a vehicle about 150 metres from her house.

Her family in Nakasi are still trying to come into terms with her death.

Her sister, Adi Maca Daulakeba said she had lost her cheerful sister.

“The rental car was speeding down the road and it hit her from the back. Her head landed on top of the glass of the car before it hit the ground,” she said.

Mrs Daulakeba said when they reached the hospital, it was too late.

“It was so fast, it all happened in an instant and we still can’t believe it.

She said her family will now wait for the post-mortem results before setting the funeral date.

Police spokesperson Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri said the 22-year-old driver was now in police custody.

The road death toll now stands at 48 compared to 37 for the same period last year.

Meanwhile six-year-old girl died last  Friday night while her family was travelling from Lautoka to Rakiraki.

Inspector  Sokomuri said the girl was thrown out of the car when it veered off the road into a sugarcane field.

The mother of the child is currently being questioned by Police.
