The Bryan Brothers, Greatest Tennis Partnership In History
Bob and Mike Bryan hold the winners trophy at the Men’s Doubles Final at the Sony Open at Crandon Park Tennis Centre last year in Key Biscayne, Florida.

When you mention tennis and especially tennis doubles teams there is one pairing that stands head and shoulders above the rest and that is the history-making Bryan Brothers.

The Bryan brothers are identical twin brothers Bob and Mike. They were born on April 29, 1978, with Mike being the elder by two minutes. Their mother Kathy Bryan was a former tennis player. She is a four-time participant at Wimbledon and made the mixed-doubles quarterfinals in 1965. She still teaches tennis. Their father, Wayne, is a lawyer, musician, and tennis instructor. Both their parents are involved in Bob and Mike’s careers.

From the tender age of four years both the twins were given tennis racquets and sent out to master the game of tennis. The twins practiced against each other regularly but were forbidden to play against each other in competitive matches; this led to them pairing up to play doubles. They won their first doubles tournament aged just six years in an Under-10 event.

This was to be the beginning of their record-winning achievements as the world greatest doubles players. They had an outstanding junior career, winning well over a hundred junior doubles titles together. Before they even reached their teenage years they were the most feared doubles partners on the tennis circuit.

I spent time with both Bob and Mike Bryan in New York City at the flashy Ritz Carlton Hotel which faces over Central Park an Iconic landmark in New York. The meeting was very relaxed as we unwound and I was pleasantly surprised to find them both so grounded and down to earth.

What was most fascinating to me was their work ethic when it came to fitness and practice time. Knowing they were the Number One tennis players in the world wasn’t enough as they told me they approached every game as challengers, this kept them hungry and determined for more victories ahead.

As you may suspect being twin brothers they are very close indeed and look after each other all the time. Even in their tennis matches they feel they can telepathically sense which brother should return the serve and they both have a great understanding of where each other is during open play.

In terms of revenue the brothers have done remarkably well indeed reeling in over $50 million dollars in winnings alone. This money is well deserved as they have held the World Number One doubles ranking jointly for over 450 weeks or over eight years and six months, which is longer than anyone else in doubles history. They have also finished the year as the Number One doubles team a record 10 times.

Their winning list includes so many records including winning Olympic Gold at the London 2012 Games.

They are also the only doubles team in history to have won every major title, having won all four Grand Slams, Olympic Gold, all nine Masters series titles, the Year-End Championships and the Davis Cup during their careers.

They have won more professional games, matches and tournaments than any other men’s pairing in tennis history.

Basically when it comes to men’s doubles in tennis they are the ‘Greatest of All Time’. One of their biggest fans is Serena Williams, who speaks very highly of the dynamic duo, she is also a friend as they spend a lot of time together on tour. To return the complement, the brothers quote Serena as the hardest working and most talented player they have ever seen.

Well there you have it, the record-breaking Bryan Brothers; the greatest tennis partnership in history.
