Soroptimists Help Kubulau School

The hostel at Kubulau District School in Bua, Vanua Levu, now has a back-up cooking facility, thanks to Soroptimist International (SI) Organisation.

SI of Labasa members spent the weekend working with the technical team of SI project ‘See Solar Cook Solar’, to install three solar cookers at the school.

Northern divisional education officer Sumiran Pratap during the opening of the project said the hostel would now be able to cut cost on buying kerosene.

“These solar cookers will work best when there is high intensity of sun light and the cooking department at the hostel can prepare any type of meal for the students,” Mr Pratap said.

“I am very impressed and thankful to SI for their support as this will benefit the school at large.”

SI Fiji is the proud recipient of the Soroptimist International Presidential Appeal 2013-2015 which resulted in the installation of solar cookers in three communities in Fiji.

They completed the project at Kubulau with an awareness session on renewable energy at the school.

“The project aims at creating awareness about solar energy while providing practical solutions to the challenges faced by the communities,” SI technical team co-ordinator and extension co-ordinator (New Zealand and Pacific) Doctor Shikha Raturi said.

“The support from Ministry of Education was evident by the presence of Mr Pratap and primary education officer of Cakaudrove Jagdish Raj and we’re thankful to them and their office for their guidance through this entire process,” she added.

She also thanked the head teacher, parents and teachers for their support and hopes that they would make good use of these cooking facilities for the betterment of the boarders as well as take good care of the cook.

SI Labasa members donated a suitable cooking pot (coated black outside) for efficient cooking.
