Suicide prevention
Norman Yee, Nadi

It seems that all stakeholders involved are now on high alert to prevent further suicides.  It was so sad to hear about the three youngsters and of all the others as well. However, one should also be aware that troubled persons can also be helped with prayers and the ‘laying of hands’ to seek healing from the Master Healer, Jesus our Lord.

Jesus is the healer whether it is depression or a sense of unworthiness, or feelings of rejection caused by bad memories, oppression or demon attacks.

So turn to Jesus. He is there for us too.

Doctrine of development
Joji  Toronibau, Tunuloa

The agrigarian doctrine of development is for ‘man to be attached to their land’ for food security, commercial and subsistence farming, ultimately for their overall welfare.

But not opting for urban drift, the bright city lives for education, health services etc and are become landless in their own nation.

After all, become the Government’s liability of the day. Back at the village there is enough primary, secondary schools, health services, Police posts for security, unused space, coconuts and sea for fishing for the wellbeing of their people.  Perharps, we now have our own version of refugees, thus ending up in squatter settlements and become landless.

Principals calls
Tukai Lagonilakeba, Nadi

Are these principals in Fiji serious or are they out of their mind? It is Mathematics first and English; their call for Mathematics to be relegated to a non-compulsory subject is wrong and unrealistic.

Why not relegate English and make iTaukei language compulsory? The Japanese language, Chinese, Egyptians, German, French, Korean, Hindustani, Russian, Malaysian, Indonesian, Arabic, Italians, Greeks etc, all these countries and others have made it their business that their native language is first and English second. No wonder they are so advanced.

I do personally feel the collective calls made by those very few principals should be investigated by the Ministry of Education. They should be identified and demoted from their respective position. Their priorities are wrong, their duty as a teacher first is to guide, direct, encourage and to get the students to understand why the world around us is all about Maths. Our current Government’s move is a shift towards a modern and literate Fiji; the call by these principals is counter-productive.The infamous Donald Trump factor of “You are fired” should be affected immediately by our Minister for Education.

Attacks
Amenatave Yaconisau, Suva

I refer to your article titled ‘Canecutter  by brutal killing’(FS 11/9/15).  Everywhere there seems to be indescribable risks for our children and womenfolk. Recently we have had almost an unbroken series of misfortunes.  First there was drug and prostitution, marijuana and alcohol, witchcraft (Charlie Charlie), suicide, violent rapes, and now it’s cold blooded killing of a child.

What is happening to our society that is supposed to be model of ‘The way the world should be’?

Apart from parents responsibility the authorities have a responsibility to protect us.

There is hardly anyone among us who has not been affected personally because we say goodbye to our own children every day and it sends chills down our spine to think it may be the last.

To have a father fight off the attacker to protect his fatally wounded daughter crying on his lap with a gaping cut is the bravest sacrifice one can imagine. It was the last sacrifice of love for his prized possession. It could have been avoided. It is about time the cane and death penalty for perpetrators of such violent crimes be reconsidered. It seems schools will have to build rest houses for parents and guardians for good reasons or bring back the mobile phone to monitor their movements. Let’s have professional counselling for all. Maybe the minister responsible can do it.
