An agreement has been reached between Fiji Television Limited and Digicel which will see Digicel acquiring SKY Pacific operations.

The agreed sale price was $5.75 million of which Digicel paid a deposit of $750,000 yesterday to Fiji Television Limited.

On completion, the acquisition is expected to ensure that the backing of a major international brand will benefit Sky Pacific’s current customer base.

The Irish-owned mobile phone company is already active in television in Papua New Guinea.

The deal is subject to the necessary regulatory approvals.

Existing Sky Pacific customers’ service will remain unaffected as the business changes ownership.

Fiji Television director, Nouzab Fareed, said though the agreement has been signed, there are still a lot of regulatory approvals needed.

Mr Fareed said: “It was nice being with a large number of subscribers for more than 10 years.

“We have done our best and now we are handing over to one of our friends who can do much better than what we have done.”

Digicel will work to expand content and services for Sky Pacific customers across 15 countries.

This includes Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Samoa, American Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Vanuatu, Tahiti, New Caledonia, Nauru, Niue, Tokelau, Tuvalu, Kiribati and the Cook Islands.

As part of this, Digicel will make its portfolio of exclusive pay TV broadcast rights such as the Super Rugby, Super League, NRL 9’s – as well as movies and quality entertainment programming – available to SKY Pacific customers.

Digicel Pacific chief executive, Mike Murphy, said: “We are committed to investing in the region and to our evolution into a total entertainment and communications provider.

“In line with this, we will soon be able to provide our Pacific customers with an enriched multimedia experience across multiple devices.”
