Australia’s Matt Giteau and Drew Mitchell tapped into Jonny Wilkinson’s Rugby World Cup exploits when the trio were together at French club Toulon, though the Wallabies pair never thought to discuss the 2015 edition.

Before this year Giteau and Mitchell were in test exile but are back playing for the Wallabies after the Australian Rugby Union’s decision in April to water down its long-standing policy of not selecting overseas-based players.

At their team hotel in Bath on Wednesday, the pair divulged Wilkinson’s thoughts on England’s win Down Under in 2003.

“We know Jonny reasonably well from our time at Toulon,” 96-cap Giteau said. “He’s been open about it, about how it was one of the best things, but also one of the most difficult things he has gone through with the fame and attention. We have been able to speak to him about the good and bad side.

“He is held in high regard in England and round the world, so for us to play alongside him and pick his brain about how he goes about his game has been a benefit for us personally.”

So did he pass on information about England’s methods? “Yeah, he’s told us everything about the English psyche,” Mitchell joked.

“We have been at Toulon a number of months and we text him, but it’s certainly not about any of that.”
