You have a life to live, you have a society to fulfill, you have a community to contribute, you have country to contribute, your parents are dependent on you, says the Minister for Education, Heritage and Art, Mahendra Reddy.

The Minister said this while speaking to primary and secondary schools, one special school and two early childhood education centres at DAV College in Nabua yesterday during the National Discourse on Suicide Prevention Day organised by the Ministry of Education.

“You are part of school community, part of your family at home, part of community out in your church, temples and mosque. Therefore, if you harm yourself, you are harming the entire community,” he said.

He reassured the students that they were here for them.

“We want to tell you that we are here for you, you have a life to live, you need to contribute,” Mr Reddy said.

As for students who had failed their exams or did not get good marks he told the students that it was not the end of the world.

“We together as a community want to help you to ensure that the journey is quite successful and my appeal to the parents of this country is to spend quality time with their children,” he said.

He urged the parents and guardians to spend at least half an hour with the children when they returned from school.

The Minister revealed: “Next year there will be bigger strategy about how we will ensure about identifing children who are in trouble, having issues and trouble and what we will do to identify those weaker children.

The awareness came about after three students took their own lives by drinking paraquat or weedicide.

The initial Police statement said they suspected that the three students had suffered psychological pressure.
