Fiji will be the first in the South Pacific to incorporate Climate Change Adaptation as a formal national qualification for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) says EU PacTVET team leader Sarah Hemstock.

Ms Hemstock said the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and the University of the South Pacific (USP) were working in collaboration on the European Union PacTVET project on sustainable energy and climate change adaptation.

“The purpose of our project is to enhance and /or create Pacific – African Caribbean and Pacific’s (P-ACP) regional and national capacity and technical expertise to respond to climate change adaptation and sustainable energy challenges,” she said.

The project is supported by the European Union.

“We look at basic technical studies for school leavers at the age of 17 and we also help those in the community that are already working but needs to broaden their skills and we will be working on traditional knowledge whereby people will have a chance to use their natural resources and also learn resource management or replanting of trees,” she said.

“We also do technical subjects where we fund training for those who want to learn how to install solar,” she said.
