An eight-bedroom house in Waiqele outside Labasa was saved by firefigters after quick thinking by Police officer Mahendra Kumar.

Mr Kumar saw smoke coming from the kitchen while on his way to work yesterday and immediately ran to investigate.

“I quickly stopped the bus and ran up to the house to see where the smoke was coming from,” he said.

Mr Kumar said when he went to the house an old lady was desperately trying to stop the fire on her own.

“I went to the kitchen and started clearing all the firewood that would easily catch fire.”

Mr Kumar then called the fire brigade to come and stop the fire.

The firefigters saved the house from being burned to the ground.

The owner of the house, 76-year-old Amara Rao’s kitchen was completely destroyed but she thanked Mr Kumar for helping fight the fire.

“I am very thankful to Mr Kumar; if it was not for him my house would have been completely destroyed,” Ms Rao said.

Police spokesperson Atunaisa Sokomuri has warned people of the North against burning rubbish during this dry spell.
