The leakage of a confidential letter which appeared on an anti-Government blogger’s Facebook page has triggered written exchanges between the Fijian Elections Office and the Opposition Office.

The letter was sent by the FEO to the Opposition Office in response to a request for polling results from the 2014 general election.

It was signed by a personal asssistant,  on behalf of the Supervisor of Elections, Mohammed Saneem. It stated that the results were available on FEO website

The letter was personally delivered to the Opposition Office. Shortly after that it was posted on the anti-Government blogger’s Facebook page. The posting questioned how the personal assistant was appointed and whether the job was advertised.

The FEO then wrote to the Opposition Office expressing its concern about the letter appearing in social media and its seriousness in relation to the law

The Opposition Office wrote back saying that they had asked an officer and he said he did not release it to the social media. He also did not know the address.

The FEO then offered  to help strengthen the handling of sensitive and confidential documents by the Opposition Office. The letter was copied to SODELPA’s president Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, general secretary Pio Tabaiwalu and MP Aseri Radrodro.  Ratu Naiqama, Mr Tabaiwalu and Opposition leader Ro Teimumu Kepa could not be reached to comment. They did not respond to questions sent to them. Mr Radrodro said he did not know about the letter and would have to check with the Opposition Office.

Mick Beddoes, the principal administrative officer, said:  “You are from the Fiji Sun, right, you know our policy, we don’t deal with the Fiji Sun- that is my comment.”

Mr Saneem said last night in response to the leaked letter on social media: “FEO does not deal with unofficial sources as far as this matter is concerned. It is best to be dealt with by the Leader of the Opposition in terms of strengthening the process of the document handling in the said office.”
