Members of the Australian Joint Committee of Public Accounts and Audit acknowledged Fiji’s unprecedented 2015 economic growth of 5.3 per cent.

They gave their response during a meeting yesterday with the Attorney-General and Minister for Finance, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

The members, Committee Secretary of the House of Representatives, Susan Cardell, MP Andrew Southcott and Senator, Chris Ketter, also discussed the general functions of the Public Accounts Committees in Fiji and Australia.

The meeting covered the differences and similarities between the Fijian and Australian Public Accounts Committees.

In Australia, the committee chairperson is from Government, whereas in Fiji it is a position held by the Opposition.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also addressed the issue of running commentaries on the part of committee members during ongoing hearings, prior to the issuing of a formal report.

He raised concerns as to how these commentaries risk jeopardising the impartial nature of the proceedings and can delegitimise the resulting findings.
