Natuva Clarifies RFMF Role
Minister For Defence, Timoci Natuva.

The Minister for Immigration, National Security and Defence, Timoci Natuva said that civilian leadership in Government must be respected.

And as for the role of Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), he said it was clear that it was a non-political institute, as provided under Section 131 of the 2013 Constitution.

He reminded parliamentarians in his response to the President’s that security was the platform for development.

Mr Natuva said in the past year there had been numerous incidents that had shocked the nation and raised new security concerns.

The President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, he said, had visited almost every school in Fiji and heard the voices of the future leaders wanting a united Fiji to focus on establishing opportunities for their future – the deserved hope for the children of Fiji.

He said his ministry aimed to campaign for this hope by broadening recruitment for the Fiji Police Force and the RFMF.

For the first time ever there was a mass recruitment of over 200 young women in the male-dominated RFMF. Furthermore he said, the RFMF’s deployment to UN Missions provided for specialist roles that required women to serve exclusively.
