Corpus Christi Teachers College returned to the Fiji University Sports Aassociation (FUSA) Tertiary Games yesterday after a lapse of three years.
They immediately stamped their mark by qualifying for the finals for the first time.
Women’s netball coach Eseta Rabale said it had been an emotional journey for them through the tournament despite losing out to USP1.
“This is a huge achievement because it’s the first time for us to reach the finals,” she said.
“We did not think we would actually qualify for the finals. When the girls came in and saw the amount of talents in every team, they got a bit intimidated and had lost hope.
“I told them that they have to be confident and know that they are just as capable as any other teams and that is what we have been stressing to the girls constantly.
“Making the finals means everything to us because some of the girls are third year students and they will be graduating, so making it to the finals is like a parting gift for them that they will always remember.”
Rabale said though they faced financial difficulties in the lead up to the games.
“This is my first year with the team and we have had some financial problems. We didn’t have a lot of money,” she said.
“With the help of other lecturers, we managed to get the team here. It has been very tough for them, especially playing against USP Suva and FNU 1, but the girls pulled through to get to the finals.
“I am so proud of them and I know that they have learned so much throughout this tournament.”
USP1 dominated the netball men’s and mixed finals.
After Day Two, USP iead the competition by a landslide 10-1 as FNU managed to secure two wins in the 7s and Rugby League competition.
USP has won the Hockey, Touch Rugby, Athletics, Basketball and Netball.
The FUSA Tertiary Games continues today with the 15s rugby, men’s and women’s soccer, beach volleyball, lawn tennis, chess, paddling and taekwando.
