Speaker Stands to Stop Opposition Disruptions

The Speaker to Parliament, Dr Jiko Luveni had to stand to enforce her authority yesterday to stop disruptions from members of the Opposition.
This was because several members of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) had defied her instructions not to interject when members were making their speeches on the debate of the President’s address.
There were four Government speakers yesterday, backbencher Samu Vunivalu, the Minister for Health and Medical Services, Jone Usamate, the Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Mere Vuniwaqa and the Acting Prime Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
The Speaker had to intervene when several of the SODELPA members tried to shout down the Minister for Lands as she was clarifying the payment of royalties.
The issue was raised by Opposition member Niko Nawaikula.
There were also some interjections when the Acting Prime Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum presented his right of reply.
