Driver Crawls From Crash

A 50-year-old employee of Telecom Fiji Limited (TFL) cheated death and crawled out from his vehicle injury free after it collided with a truck loaded with sugarcane.
The incident happened at 7.15pm last Saturday night near Nasekula Village in Labasa.
The TFL staff, who did not want to be named, said: “I was returning home from work when I saw this lorry loaded with sugarcane swaying.
“It seemed like the truck was over loaded and it drove closer to my side. I knew that if I did not act quickly it would hit my vehicle and cause serious damage.”
The cane truck eventually hit the other vehicle before it veered off the road and came to a stop in a ditch.
“However, I managed to crawl out of the vehicle without injuries,” the TFL staff said.
“I did call my boss in Suva and reported the accident.”
Police spokesperson Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri confirmed the incident and said: “Luckily both the TFL and truck drivers were not injured.”
Telecom Fiji Limited North manager Steven Chow confirmed that he was made aware of the accident.
A witness, Bulou Dimuri, who was walking home to Nasekula Village, alleged the truck driver lost control of the vehicle.
“The accident happened right before my eyes and when I went closer to check, both the drivers managed to come out of their vehicle without any injuries,” Mrs Dimuri said.
Inspector Sokomuri said this was the second accident in Labasa during the weekend where trucks loaded with cane were involved.
“I understand the drivers are trying to hurry to take their loads of cane to the mill however, they should be mindful of all road users as well,” he said.
Police investigation continues.
