The Ministry of Health and Medical Services said majority of dengue fever cases were from the Northern Division.

The division recorded 724 dengue cases so far this year.

The cumulative national total of confirmed cases is 979 and 37 were recorded during the epidemiological week (epi week).

An epidemiological week, commonly referred to as an epi week, is a standardised method of counting weeks to allow for the comparison of data year after year.

Dengue fever is a painful debilitating mosquito-borne disease caused by any one of four closely related dengue viruses which are related to the viruses that cause West Nile Infection and Yellow Fever.

Minister for Health and Medical Services Jone Usamate said Fijian must be proactive against dengue fever.

“Dengue fever historically would appear in intervals of three to five years, but today this is no longer true. The pattern is erratic and we must be ready, we must be proactive about it,” Mr Usamate said.

He said dengue fever had become a public health threat throughout the year.

“Sadly cases continued to be recorded throughout 2014 from all the divisions until the end of the outbreak.

“We should take the first step in cleaning mosquitoes breeding places to avoid this. It is far more cost effective to have a clean-up to prevent dengue outbreaks than having to meet the cost of the outbreak itself,” he said.
