London: Defeat by Wales leaves England in danger of becoming first World Cup hosts to fail to get through pool stages

Now facing a potential all-or-nothing Pool A clash with Australia at Twickenham next Sunday, Tom Youngs insisted at the team’s Pennyhill Park headquarters that he was “very convinced” England would prevail against the Wallabies and avoid the embarrassment of becoming the first host nation never to make it to the quarter-finals.

He was also adamant that the team had no need to rally round Chris Robshaw in the face of widespread criticism about the captain’s fateful decision that England should kick for the corner when awarded a 78th minute penalty at Twickenham, instead of letting Owen Farrell, who had not missed a shot at goal all night, go for what would have been an equalising score.

Instead, the driving maul from the resulting lineout was repelled by memorable Welsh resistance, allowing the visitors to come away with one of their greatest victories, 28-25.

No Regrets

Yet Youngs, always the sort of bright, upbeat character a dispirited side needs in adversity, insisted his teammates were raring to go again to prevent a potential nightmare early exit for the home country.

“I’m very convinced (we’ll still qualify),” he said. “What gives me that belief is all the hard work we’ve done over the last 12 to 13 weeks and all the work we’ve done before that. We’re a tight-knit group.

It’s a challenge and one we’ll accept and look forward to.”

Of Robshaw’s decision not to go for goal but for the attacking lineout, Youngs reckoned the team had no regrets.

“We back it all, back the group, back the decision. We went for the win,” he said.
