A mother of Naselai, Tailevu, could not hold back tears as she placed the wreath to remember her late son –  Police Constable Josua Katonivere, yesterday.

Marica Rabakoko, 64, said memories of her son returned yesterday when she laid the wreath during the Fiji Police Force Remembrance Day at the Police Special Response Unit in Nasinu.

Mrs Rabakoko was among more than 20 family members who attended yesterday’s event.

The late Constable Katonivere, who was the second eldest of her seven children, died on May 10. He collapsed and died while on duty.

“This day hurts me so much, especially as a mother,” Mrs Rabakoko said.

“I couldn’t stop thinking of him throughout the ceremony. Today (yesterday) reminds me so much of how much he was committed to his work.

“He was the sole breadwinner in our family. To be present here today just hurts me so much, to come here without seeing him once more.

“When I walked up to place my wreath, I could see his face. This day reminds me of his early days in the force.”

The late PC Katonivere spent 29 years in the Fiji Police Force.

He was among the 12 Police officers who died between 2014 and this year.

Mrs Rabakoko said she would attend all  Police Remembrance Day to remember him.
