A 10-minute silence and a wreath were also thrown into the sea to remember the lives of seafarers that were lost at sea.

The contribution of local shipping to the economy of Fiji cannot be understated, says Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Vijay Nath.

He said without shipping, the import and export of goods on the scale necessary for our livelihoods would not be possible.

He said shipping played a vital role in regional and world trade and was the backbone of most states, Fiji included.

“Sea trade continues to expand, bringing benefits for consumers across the region and the world. With the advancement in shipping as a mode of transport and economic activity, the industry is well placed,” he said.

“Without ships and the transportation services, the region and the world would not be as prosperous as it is today and many island states would not be able to participate in domestic and international trade.

Because of the growth of this industry, Mr Nath said it is imperative that the industry is well placed in terms of human resource development.

Last week’s careers expo held at Suva’s Carpenters Fore Shore in conjunction with the World Maritime Day celebrations was a testament of Government’s interest in strengthening the industry.

Mr Nath said the very essence of having the careers exposition was to showcase what the industry could offer in terms of employment and career paths.

“It has been said in many circles that the maritime industry has not aptly opened its doors in terms of what it is all about.

“This is an inherent grey area which needs to be opened up to the public.

“It goes without saying that without an able and effective human resource an industry will not be able to function effectively. This also holds true for the maritime industry,” he added.
