The Minister for Immigration, National Security and Defence, Timoci Natuva farewelled the Republic of the Fiji Military Force team for the International Defence Rugby Competition in England at the Fiji Naval Base yesterday.
Timoci Natuva reminded the players on the importance of discipline on and off the field.
“You should do your part when you’re on the ground. I have accompanied teams to New Zealand, Hong Kong and the major problem that I’ve seen is indiscipline and drinking problems.
“Control your drinking behaviour. It’s better for you to come back home and drink here rather than over there.
“They’ll be watching you, so show them where you come from and the qualities that you’ve been taught here in the Force,” Natuva said.
The team consists of 40 personnel – 30 players and 10 officials who will accompany the team to Portsmouth in Engaland.
Team managaer Captain Saula Koro said they had prepared well since the loss in the Ratu Sukuna Bowl tournament.
“We did not dwell on that loss. Our team officials have ratified our mistakes and we are well prepared for the tournament,” Captain Koro said
The tournament features South Africa, France, Australia, Tonga, British Army, Royal Air Force, Canada and Georgia.
“We are rated last in our pool and the team knows the importance of this tournament.
“We are not going in to make up the numbers. It’s a good opportunity for the players to redeem themselves..
“This is some like the Defence World Cup. It gathers defence teams from around the world,” Koro said,
RFMF is pooled with Royal Navy, New Zealand and Japan.
The captain is Jolame Bera.
The team depart Nadi at 4pm today with the Tongan team.
