The Nadi Town Council (NTC) is expected to save millions of dollars with the new rubbish dump earmarked to be set up near Nawai.

This was revealed yesterday by Nadi special administrator, Robin Ali.

Mr Ali said for years Nadi had been sharing the rubbish dump with Lautoka City Council at Vunato, Lautoka.

“We will save a lot as currently we are spending over half-a-million dollars a year in taking our rubbish to Lautoka. That’s a costly exercise, but we will be having a lot of reduction of that in the future,” he said.

He said it had taken them sometime to identity the site with regards to certain regulations which had to be followed.

“We have to do a feasibility study at the site, so we are getting our consultant soon to see whether the site is suitable for dumping purposes.

“According to CAAF regulation, the dumping site has to be a distance of 13 kilometres away from the flight path of aeroplane going for the airport. That area has been taken care of and we have to find out the nature of the soil now,” he said.
