Nine women from Vanua Levu yesterday departed to work in Australia under the Seasonal Worker Programme (SWP).

The group which is the fifth to date to leave Fiji will be employed by the Plant Grow Pick Pty Ltd.

They were recruited from the Northern Division through the National Employment Centre (NEC) and were selected by the employer, forming the fifth group workers under the under the programme

Team leader Meri Musuvanua, 49, thanked Government for giving them the opportunity.

“This is a blessing for the nine of us and we are thankful to Government for this rare opportunity,” Ms Musuvanua said.

She said with such employment, they would bring change to their families’ livelihoods.

“If not for this work scheme, we will all be in the village without any work. This is a first trip for the most of us and we, as a team, are hoping to learn as much as we can from the trip,” she said.

Ms Musuvanua said the group went through a three-day orientation and a week of life skills training with the Ministry of labour prior to their departure.

Pritika Dayal, 23, is one of the women.

“I thank this Government for this trip and I will take it no matter how tough the challenge might be out there,” she said.

“This opportunity is hard to get and that is why I am making use of it.”

The nine are Pritika Dayal, Veronika Serea, Timaima Frances, Asenaca Divavi, Marisela Rokovaki, Shobna Devi, Ilisapeci Vakanavue, Anjita and Meri Musuvanua

Twenty-one female Fijian workers have been hired by the company for six-month work duration.
