The Port of Suva handles majority of the country’s total export and import cargo.

This was highlighted in the Fiji Ports Country Report that was presented by Fiji Ports Corporation Limited chief executive officer, Vajira Piyasena and Fiji Ports Terminal chief executive officer ,Hasthika Dela, during the 40th Pacific Maritime Transport Alliance (PMTA) conference in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea early this month.

Fiji Ports owns and carries out maritime operations in the four main ports of:

 

MAIN PORTS OF ENTRY

Suva

– Handles 54 per cent of the total Fiji’s export and import cargo

– Comprised of 72 per cent containerized, 25 per cent both liquid and dry bulk and rest on non-computerized

 

Lautoka

– Handles 42 per cent of the total export and import

– Comprised of 38 per cent containerized rest 62 per cent liquid and dry bulk cargo

– Vuda- a liquid bulk terminal which handles the bulk of the liquid bulk cargo.

 

Levuka

– A fishing port handling 0.22 per cent of the total import and export cargo

– This constituted 75 per cent frozen fish for the government owned tuna canner with the balance being liquid bulk

 

Malau

– Handles 3 per cent of the total cargo throughput

– Comprised of 49 perc ent liquid bulk and 51 per cent dry bulk

 

SECOND TIER PORTS

These are ports with specialised functions registered by Government, but is administered by FPCL for statutory requirements like ISPS and so on.

 

Wairiki

– A dedicated wood chips terminal commenced operations in 2012

 

Rotuma

– Established through the Fiji Government’s initiative in assisting the Micronesian countries in the Pacific for exportation of root crops with shipping schedules covering Fiji/ Rotuma/ selected Microniesian countries/ Rotuma/ Fiji.
