Budding women’s rugby coaches continued with their workshop as part of the strength and conditioning training programme yesterday.

Fiji Rugby Union development officer Alifereti Mocelutu said this was a good opportunity for the girls to familiarise themselves with the basics of coaching a sevens team.

“For this lot here most of them are players so I’ve told them to take out their hat as players and think like a coach of a sevens.  They have completed level one coaching 15s and now we’re concentrating on coaching sevens,” Mocelutu said.

The online course includes field and theory work for the participants to have a feel on what is needed from them as a coach.

“It is important because of the women’s sevens tournament is held every year, so now we’re trying to build up some coaches in the next five or six years to prepare them for future coaching position for the national team, so that why we’re focus on the ground work now,” Mocelutu said.

Mocelutu also mention some of the setback that women players face and hope to improve on its development within the women’s sports.

“One major setback is that we don’t have a player base; we haven’t got enough competition specially from secondary schools, this where we could get players to train and help because we’re always focusing on the same lot of players to play and in terms of injury there is no back up squad, because we don’t have the number of players,” he said.

Once the participants complete their online courses they will receive their certificates of competing the module.
