In an effort to improve literacy, the Labasa Rotary Club donated six boxes of library books to Wavuwavu Primary School yesterday.
Club president Ami Kohli said the club wanted to assist the school in upgrading their library to help students gain knowledge.
“The club has donated books worth more than
$4000 which will benefit students,” Mr Kohli said.
He said the club was approached by the past president of the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North Vincent Sahayam, who was also the school’s headteacher.
“The club went and had a look at the library and was impressed with the manner in which their small library was maintained,” Mr Kohli said.
He said the club concentrated on literacy and health programme and has agreed to assist with prizes for their annual prizegiving.
Mr Sahayam said their 12 pre-school students would also access the library.
“We have 85 students from Year One to Year Eight and they are excited about reading new books.
“Teachers would have access to more information and would be in a good position to encourage students to do more English reading and writing,” he said.
