There is great interest among Fijian youths to join the military, says Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Land Force Commander Colonel Sitiveni Qiliho.

This is after 220 men and women marched in at the Forces Training Group in Nasinu yesterday to undergo a 12-week basic recruitment training.

Colonel Qiliho said they had originally intended to take in only 150 recruits but because they had received close to 3000 applications they increased the recruitment to 220.

“The number of people applying to the RFMF for the recruitment has been high unfortunately we can’t take them all,” Colonel Qiliho said.

“They are all very high calibre applicants. There are university graduates and Form Seven passers.”

He said they have also taken in some engineering specialists, musicians and other specialists that were required by the RFMF.

Colonel Qiliho said because of the increasing interest in joining the RFMF, they planned to hold another recruitment in January next year.

Meanwhile, Aisea Natoki, 21, of Cuvu in Nadroga was studying a Diploma in Architectural Technology before deciding to join the RFMF.

Mr Natoki said he saw this as a way of securing employment. He also hoped the military training would assist to be independent in life.
