Boat Sinks Near Kings Wharf

Mystery surrounds an incident at the Kings Wharf in Suva last Sunday when a boat sank near the Kings Wharf.

The boat was empty at the time of the incident.

Fiji Ports Corporation Limited (FPCL) chief executive officer Vajira Piyasena claims the boat “sank due to water ingress” and believes “it is now damaged”.

“This is just an old small boat that used to do transfer of people from ship to shore and vice-versa.”

He said at times the FPCL would use the same boat as a backup pilot boat.

“No specific investigation is required and it is up to the owner to repair it if possible,” Mr Piyasena said.

He declined to make further comments.

A witness who wished to remain anonymous said the owner was trying to get the boat repaired and carry on with its services.

Fiji Sun could not establish who owns the boat.
