Lautoka Goju-Ryu Club won the Karate Fiji Annual National Championship at the Yat Sen Primary School yesterday

The western club won eight gold medals while  Suva finished in second place with seven gold medals.

Fijian Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee vice-president Vanessa Kilner acknowledges the national karate reps for their participation.

“It is considered an important sport within the family of FASANOC,”Kilner said.

“A majority of the Pacific Games team were in attendance, either participating as athletes or assisting with the refereeing, which augurs well for the continued development of the sport.”

The championship also provided an opportunity for referees to upgrade their knowledge of the World Karate Federation rules.

The next event on the Karate Fiji calendar is the World Junior and Cadet Championships in Jakarta, Indonesia in November, which will be followed by a camp in Suva in December.
