The family of a 26-year-old man who was killed in an accident last Friday is seeking justice on the death of their son and brother.

The manager for the family-owned business, Stylist Furniture and Construction Company, Ashneel Singh, was on his way to watch a late night movie with his partner when the accident happened on Edinburgh Drive in Suva.

He was rushed to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital but died later.

A South African diplomat was the driver of the vehicle that allegedly hit Mr Singh’s vehicle.

The victim’s mother, Aruna Devi, said they were unhappy with the release of the diplomat. She said they were told by Police that the diplomat was protected by diplomatic immunity and had to be released.

“Because of him my son is gone; everyone is just heartbroken by what we have been told,” an emotional Mrs Devi said.

“My son didn’t do anything wrong and because of someone’s carelessness he lost his life and this person is entitled to go free.

“Everything that was said in the news has brought injustice to our family….Because of this diplomat my son lost his life,” she cried.

Mrs Devi said she last spoke to her son at around 8pm when she informed her he was going to the movies with his partner.

“We received the news at 11.45pm from his friend and we went straight to hospital. When we came the doctors were trying to revive him but it was too late.

Elder sister Shivani Singh said the family was planning his brother’s marriage next year but all this had come to naught.

Mrs Devi described her son as a very humble person who was always very respectful towards her.

“He was my favorite boy. He never used to talk back to me and was always very kind.”
