More than 10,000 surgical operations are performed in hospitals around the country each year, said the Minister for Health and Medical Services, Jone Usamate.

He said this during the commissioning of the refurbished Operating Theatre and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) in Suva last Thursday.

“Close to 6000 surgeries are done annually at CWM Hospital alone,” he said.

Mr Usamate said these numbers would increase as the Fijian surgical services improved and expanded into other sub-specialty areas.

“Fiji needs to advance and be modernised to keep abreast with the development and technological advancement in all areas of medicine and health service,” Mr Usamate said.
