Prominent sports administrator Paul Yee died in Suva yesterday.

The former Fijian Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) high performance commission chairman has been sick for the past three weeks.

FASANOC and Athletics Fiji president Joseph Rodan Senior said Yee’s death came as a shock to him.

“Three weeks ago we heard he was sick when he didn’t turn up for a meeting but we didn’t know it was this serious,” Rodan Snr said.

“I was shocked when I heard about his passing after church and just couldn’t believe it.”

Yee would be well known for being heavily involved in athletics since competing in the Catholic Amateur Athletics Club (CAAC) in the 1970s.

Since then, Yee has been involved in athletics attending various workshops and clinics organised by Oceania Athletics Association (OAA) where he received a Level 2 certification in Per Regional Athletic Coaching Course.

Yee was actively involved in Fiji’s performance in the Pacific Games as a technical official manager as well as attending the Oceania Championships and World Junior Championships.

In 2002, he was the assistant chef de mission to the Commonwealth Games in Manchester, United Kingdom.

Yee has been awarded FASANOC technical official of the year in 2008 and received an Oceania Athletics Association Merit award in 2005.

Rodan Snr said with Yee’s death, it is a great loss not only for Athletics Fiji but sports in Fiji.

“We are very sad that Paul has passed away because he has made valuable contribution to sports in Fiji,” he said.

“As far as athletics is concerned he has always supported athletics in Fiji and Fiji has lost a great son as he has been an active official, coach and supporter of sports in Fiji.

“Paul was very unselfish, he would always give his time and knowledge when needed by anyone when it came to sports. This is just such a great loss to Athletics Fiji.”

Yee held high positions in FASANOC as vice-president and president and vice -president for Athletics Fiji.
