Satya Vulalo could only wish his mentor, the late Dr Leone Sevudredre, was still alive today to witness her work being recognised during the Fiji Oral Health Workers Association Awards held last Saturday night.

Mrs Vulalo is currently a dentist at the Ba Health Centre. She had retired in 2012 but was re-hired by the ministry.

Mrs Vulalo was presented the Award of Excellence in Dental Therapy during the awards night at the Suva Holiday Inn.

She attributed her achievement to Dr Sevudredre who had mentored her during her early years at the Fiji School of Medicine.

“He taught me of the importance of punctuality and delivering our service with a smile,” Mrs Vulalo said.

“Servicing people with a smile in our profession I believe is very important because when people come to us they are like our customers.”

She was not expecting to win an award because there were many other competitors from her younger colleagues at the ministry.

“I am really happy that my work has been recognised. I’ve had a tough work journey; sometimes we didn’t have the resources and facilities at certain places I was posted to but I still had to make do with what I had to deliver my service to the people, my customers,” she said.

Mrs Vulalo joined the Ministry of Health and Medical Services in 1979 after graduating with a Certificate in Dental Therapist.
