The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar, last Saturday helped solve drinking water problems for people and sugarcane farmers of Tavarau which is between Ba and Lautoka.

For decades the area has been affected by water problems. Amidst the ongoing dry spell affecting the country, Government’s donation of two 20,000 litres water tanks, lit up the faces of Tavarau residents.

About 368 households in the cane belt area would benefit from the help.

Tavarau Water Community vice-president Rup Chand thanked Government for the assistance.

“I must thank the Bainimarama Government for granting our wish here,” Mr Chand said.

He said they sought Government’s help last year.

“We had thought that this issue wouldn’t be solved, but we thank the minister for supplying us, not only with one, but two new tanks.

“The prayers of these people have been heard and the people of this area are so blessed.”

Mr Chand said the tanks would help filter water to houses because the water source was far.

“The main water source is three kilometres away. We will have to fill these water tanks and all the people in this area will drink from this tank.

“Most of the times we have less water supplied to houses. We have had people going to hospitals because of this.

“These tanks will prevent us from having water-borne diseases and will ensure that we will drink clean water. This is the first time for us to receive such assistance.

“I thank Ms Akbar for thinking of the women in this area and hearing their plea. Women, children and the disabled will drink from these tanks,” he said.
