The Land Transport Authority (LTA) will be stepping up its operation on overloaded vehicles in the coming weeks, says chief executive officer Naisa Tuinaceva.

He said this was after the number of overloaded trucks on our roads kept increasing despite repeated awareness and warnings by the authority.

The LTA has estimated that 42 per cent of heavy vehicles running on our roads were always overloaded.

“There are three negative implications of overloading; it increases the cost of road maintenance and repairs which cost the relevant authorities millions of dollars annually; there is the safety factor which threatens the safety of other road users and lastly it shortens the life span of roads,” Mr Tuinaceva said.

He said LTA was working with other relevant authorities to increase the awareness on the issue by visiting and consulting with truck operators.

“Our enforcement procedures are clear; they have been reminded about the overloading regulations which must be followed; any breach of the regulations means a maximum fine of about $1000,” Mr Tuinaceva said.

“LTA has also enhanced its overloading operation capacity with the introduction of portable wheel weighing and the use of its weighbridges around the country. LTA has also increased its manpower so that their overloading operation is visible on a 24/7 basis.”

He said this was because a lot of heavy truck operators were used to operating outside of the usual business hours or in the wee hours of the morning.
