Minister for Local Government, Housing and Environment, Parveen Kumar said people caught littering or throwing rubbish carelessly would be fined starting from next year.

He said his Ministry had been working on the amount of fines and charges to be imposed against those caught littering.

This follows the establishment of the ‘Name and Shame’ campaign in August to prevent people from littering.

“Those caught littering will start facing fine penalties from next year,” Mr Kumar said.

“The Department of Environment will start revealing and fining people who have been found littering and who have been listed in the ‘Name and Shame’ campaign starting from next year.

“We will start fining offenders from next year once everything has been finalised,” he said.

He said some people had been caught littering.

After the Fiji Sun highlighted this national shame in August, Mr Kumar launched the national “Name and Shame” campaign to prevent people from littering.

He earlier said that the Department of Environment had embarked on a two-phase programme directed at prosecuting people who litter.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, in an earlier report, called on people to keep the environment clean. He also appealed to students to help in the campaign against illegal rubbish disposal around the country.
