A lot of uncertainties have been raised in regards to the decisions undertaken by Fiji Television Limited recently.

These queries were all addressed by the board at the Fiji Television Limited 2015 annual general meeting yesterday at the Tanoa Plaza in Suva.

Chief executive officer Geoffrey Smith said Fiji Television is a very different company to when it started.

While addressing concerns Mr Smith said: “I can say that the direction taken by management is pretty much the same direction with the previous ownership.

“That is to look after the business everyday and try to make a profit out of every 12 months.

“I have no intention of failing as a CEO and at the end of the day I will deliver my best and help raise  profit for the company.”

Fiji Television Limited had a close door session with the shareholders where discussions on the future of the company were addressed.

Shareholders

Based on performance there was a mixed reaction from the shareholders.

Major shareholders Fijian Holdings Limited Group chief executive officer Nouzad Fareed said he was very pleased with the leadership portrayed by the board yesterday.

Mr Fareed said: “I’m extremely proud and happy for Fiji TV management team compromising, Geoffrey Smith, Nitesh Chand and Karen Lobandan.

“They did a fantastic job by presenting to the shareholders as to what is happening in regards to the media, why the transactions failed and why Sky Pacific was sold and the way forward for Fiji Television without Sky.

“It’s a challenging environment but we will reach our destination of making and improving the shareholder value.

“Looking forward it will be extremely tough and the main thing now is that Fiji Television Limited is going back to business of doing free to air television so that is what we are going to do.”

Meanwhile, Winston Thompson former Director on Fiji Television Limited board and also former CEO for Telecom Fiji, questioned the confidence in the leadership.

Mr Thompson said: “I am somewhat concerned at the prospects put forward. I am not particularly comforted by the presentation by the chief executive.

“It seems to me that the operating environment has become very uncertain, the challenges are great and actions seem to be taken to undermine the viability in the company.”

However, Mr Fareed said: “I’m extremely proud, I got a fantastic management team, and I have a full faith confidence in our management team.

Re-elections

The meeting re-appointed Ajai Punja, Nouzab Farred and Ulaiasi Taoi as the board of directors for Fiji Television Limited.

Whereas the position of chairman is still maintained by Apakuki Kurusiga.

Future Plans

Mr Smith explained Fiji Television Limited will now be moving its focus towards local programme and free to air service.

He said: “With the sale of Sky Pacific we will now have more local programmes from the internal team.”
