Kelepi Golea was excited when he was announced the Dux of Bucalevu Secondary School during the prizegiving ceremony on Taveuni Island yesterday.

The 18-year-old lad was also given the award for scoring the highest subject marks in Accounting and Economics.

The youngest of three siblings said he was the only one from his family to complete Year 13 and getting a dux award.

“I have sacrificed so many hours of sleep to complete my revision in order to make my family proud,” Kelepi said.

“My ambition is to become an economist and I am confident that I would do well in my national exam and get admission to University of the South Pacific (USP) next year,” Kelepi said.

“I owe my success to the Lord, my mother, my aunty in Australia and my siblings,” he said.

Kelepi is from Somosomo Village.

His mother, Asenaca Golea, said she had been praying for her son to get a scholarship to purse tertiary education.

Bucalevu Secondary School principal Mohammed Gani said 31 students from Year 10, 12 and 13 were given prizes.

The chief guest was Land Transport Authority officer-in-charge Taveuni, Tomasi Tui who spoke on culturing excellence of road safety in students.
