Khan Acquittal Appealed

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Christopher Pryde, has decided to appeal the decision of the High Court in Lautoka acquitting Nadi businessman Shaheed Khan.

Mr Khan was acquitted by High Court judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe last month of all charges relating to the $30-million drug bust. He was charged with the unlawful importation of 29.9kg of heroin into Fiji last year.

The judge had ruled that Mr Khan had no knowledge of the shipment of heroin that was seized at the Queens Wharf by Police intelligence officials.

Mr Khan had spent nine months in custody before being acquitted

The DPP has filed the Petition of Appeal in the registry of the Court of Appeal yesterday.

The co-accused, an Australian National Ethan Kai, was convicted for one count of unlawful importation of illicit drugs and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment last month.
