Apolonia Vaivai and Manueli Tulo flew out of Noumea yesterday to Pune, India for the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships.

Both these athletes are based at the Oceania Weightlifting Institute in Noumea, New Caledonia in preparation for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games training under the high performance coach, Paul Coffa

Tulo, who won three gold medals at the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby, will be competing in the 56kg  division on Monday.

Pune is a memorable venue for Tulo as this was where he made his International debut in 2008 when he won Fiji’s first gold medal in the Commonwealth Youth Games.

Vaivai, who won the Bronze medal in the 75Kg category at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014, will be competing in the 69kg weight division on Wednesday.

She has reduced her body weight from 75kg to 69kg, while still lifting her best weights.

Both the lifters will have very strong competition as lifters throughout the Commonwealth are using the Championships to qualify for World Championships in Houston, USA in November 2015 and 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

Weightlifting Fiji secretary Chris Yee thank the Fiji Government, Fijian National Sports Commission, FASANOC, IOC Olympic Solidarity, Oceania Weightlifting Federation &Oceania Weightlifting  Institute, our sponsors Patterson Brothers and BSP in helping Apolonia and Tulo’s preparation and participation in this Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships.
