While many people were winding down their Fiji Day celebration at their favourite picnic spots yesterday, villagers from Dravuwalu in Kadavu were raising funds for their village projects.

The Political Counsellor at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, Gu Yu At, opened the Dravuwalu Village fund drive with a $10,000 cheque donation.

Dravuwalu Village development chairperson Salote Nawalowalo thanked the Chinese embassy for their kind donation.

“We have been raising funds for our village for the past five years and it has assisted our families living in the island in so many ways,” Mrs Nawalowalo said.

“We have been able to set up small businesses in our village, upgrade the look of our village and we even have invested our money for future use.”

The villagers hope to raise more than $25,000 to construct a village seawall.

“Due to climate change, our village has been going through challengers in terms of rising sea level and we want to minimise its effect on our families who are living in the village,” Mrs Nawalowalo said.

“Today the people of Dravuwalu who are living in Suva and some who are here from the village will be fundraising for further development to take place in our village.”

The fund drive at Delainamasi School ground in Nasinu was a fun-filled day that had loads of entertainment.
